Monkey Bread Recipe with Watkins Cinnamon

Looking for a quick, easy and delicious breakfast or brunch recipe? Make Monkey Bread!

3 (12 ounce) packages refrigerated biscuit dough
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons Watkins Purest Ground Cinnamon
1/2 cup margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease one 9 or 10 inch tube/Bundt® pan.
2. Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a plastic bag. Cut biscuits into quarters. Shake 6 to 8 biscuit pieces in the sugar cinnamon mix. Arrange pieces in the bottom of the prepared pan. Continue until all biscuits are coated and placed in pan. If using nuts and raisins, arrange them in and among the biscuit pieces as you go along.
3. In a small saucepan, melt the margarine with the brown sugar over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute. Pour over the biscuits.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 minutes. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a plate. Do not cut! The bread just pulls apart.

Watkins Featured Recipe: Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients
4-1/4 to 4-3/4 cups/1 to 1.25 liters all-purpose flour

1 package quick-rising active dry yeast

1-1/4 cups/325 mL milk

1 tsp/5 mL Original Double-Strength Vanilla

1/4 cup/60 mL sugar

1/4 cup/60 mL butter

1 tsp/5 mL salt

1 tsp/5 mL Purest Ground Cinnamon 6 oz.

2 eggs

6 tbsp/90 mL butter, softened

1/2 cup/125 mL brown sugar

4 tsp/20 mL Purest Ground Cinnamon 6 oz.

1 cup/250 mL powdered sugar

1 tsp/5 mL Original Double-Strength Vanilla

4 to 5 tsp/20 to 25 mL milk

Directions
Combine 1-1/2 cups/375 mL of the flour and yeast in large mixing bowl. Heat the 1-1/4 cups/325 mL milk, vanilla, sugar, butter, salt, and cinnamon just until mixture is warm (120-130°F/50-55°C), stirring constantly. Add to flour mixture along with eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds; scraping sides of bowl constantly. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes. Using a spoon, stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can (dough will be soft). Knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough (3 to 5 minutes total). Shape dough into a ball; place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 to 1-1/2 hours). (The dough is ready for shaping when you can lightly press two fingers 1/2-inch/1-cm into dough and an indentation remains.) Punch down dough and divide in half. Place each half on lightly floured surface and smooth into a ball. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.

On lightly floured surface, roll half the dough into a 12 × 8-inch/30 × 20-cm rectangle. Spread with 3 tbsp/45 mL of the butter. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle half over rectangle. Roll up from short side. Seal edges (brushing with water makes rolls easier to seal). Repeat with remaining dough. Slice one roll into 8 pieces and the other roll into 7 pieces. Arrange slices, evenly, cut-side up, in greased 13 × 9-inch/33 × 23-cm baking dish. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled (about 30 minutes). Bake at 350°F/180°C for 25 to 40 minutes or until light brown. Invert at once onto wire rack, invert again. Cool slightly. Drizzle rolls with a glaze made by combining the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Serve rolls warm or store in an air-tight container.

All natural cleaning supplies to aid in clean-up and recovery efforts

(Jan. 28, 2010) — J.R. Watkins Naturals has donated more than $80,000 in
product — including all-purpose cleaner, dish soap, laundry detergent and hand soap — to aid the Haitian earthquake clean-up and recovery efforts.

The company has partnered with the University of Miami's Global Institute for Community Health and Development, which has a clinic in Haiti and was able to coordinate the delivery of these and other donations. "Conditions following the recent earthquake are difficult to imagine," J.R. Watkins President Mark Jacobs said. "We saw an opportunity to offer some comfort to the Haitian people by providing them with basic, day-to-day cleaning necessities."

J. R. Watkins has a tradition of providing support to those in need following natural disasters. In 2007, the company donated similar supplies to the residents of Rushford, Minn., after flooding in the region.

I wrapped up the 2009 Holiday season with my very last vendor show at the Wilsonville Methodist Church Christmas Bazaar. What a warm and wonderful way to end the year! Everyone was so nice and welcoming. I love small towns.

Watkins Thanksgiving Herb Stuffing Recipe

Ingredients
1 cup/250 mL (2 sticks) butter

2 cups/500 mL celery, chopped

1 cup/250 mL onions, chopped

2 tsp/10 mL Organic Thyme

2 tsp/10 mL Organic Rosemary

1 ½ tsp/7.5 mL Poultry Seasoning

1 tsp/5 mL Seasoning Salt

½ tsp/2.5 mL Black Pepper 6 oz

12 cups/3000 mL dry unseasoned bread cubes

4 cups/1 quart prepared Chicken Soup & Gravy

Directions
Melt butter in large skillet on medium heat. Add celery and onions; cook and stir 5 minutes. Stir in Thyme, Rosemary, Poultry Seasoning, Seasoning Salt and Black Pepper. Place bread cubes in a large bowl. Add celery mixture and broth; toss gently until well mixed. Spoon into lightly greased 13 x 9-inch / 33 x 23 cm baking dish. Bake in preheated oven at 375F / 190C for 35 minutes or until heated through and lightly browned. Serves 18

This Saturday, October 3rd come visit my Watkins booth at the Mt Laurel Harvest Festival! This is a free event with fun activities for the whole family!

Mt Laurel, Ala. – The Town of Mt Laurel (www.mtlaurel.com) is hosting its eighth annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, October, 3rd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a free event that's suitable for the whole family, including Fido! The festival will feature a farmer's market and craft fair with a huge variety of vendors, plus new home tour. Kids can enjoy an inflatable play area, face painting, plus hay rides throughout the community. Live music will be provided by Fiddlin' in the Parlor.

Mt Laurel residents and business owners will be hosting their 4th annual Scarecrow Trail again during the festival. Attendees can view the unique scarecrow creations at the entrance to Mt Laurel and in front of the local stores

Much to the delight of young guests, Snow White will be visiting with little ones in front of the Mt Laurel fire station and Star Wars & Ghostbuster characters will make special appearances throughout the day for fun photo opportunities.

Pumpkin Bread Brownies (Orangies?)

I have just three words to say about Watkins Pumpkin Bread mix from the 2009 Seasonal Favorites line.

Oh. My. Goodness. DELICIOUS!!! (OK, that was four words.)

Wow, yall, this stuff is incredible, and it's EVEN better when you bake it as a chewy brownie type bar instead of a bread.

I got a Bakers Edge Brownie pan for my birthday today (thank you mom!) and I decided to put it to good use tonight. I christened it with a batch of Watkins Pumpkin Bread. Want to see how they turned out?

Come on... lemme show you.

First I blended one egg with 1 cup Watkins Pumpkin Butter and stick of unsalted butter.

Just get them all good and mixed together like this:

Then I slowly added the Watkins Pumpkin Bread mix until it formed a nice thick batter like this.

Then I greased my new Bakers Edge with Watkins Cooking Spray

And poured the batter into the pan. It didn't quite make it all the way around the pan, but that was ok. No biggie.

I baked it for 40 minutes at 350 degrees. The package said 1 hour, but I checked it at 40 minutes along and they were PERFECT so I took them out and let them cool.

Then I ate the ugly end piece before I remembered to snap a photo of the finished product.

Then I cut them up into chewy delicious squares. You can eat them as is, or spread them with more Pumpkin Butter. Your call. They would also be great with a cream cheese icing, I'm betting.

But honestly? They were so good I had to physically stop myself from eating half the batch in one sitting.

The pumpkin bread is good, but these brownies were EXCELLENT!!! Try these today!! And if you are looking for a easy fall/thanksgiving dessert recipe, THIS IS IT!!

Ingredients:
1 egg
1 stick butter
1 cup Pumpkin butter (OR 1 cup canned pumpkin)
1 package Watkins Pumpkin Bread Mix

Mix egg, butter and pumpkin butter, slowly add bread mix until batter formed. Bake at 350 degrees about 40 minutes until golden brown. If you don't have a Bakers Edge pan you could easily substitute a 9x9 or 8x8 pan and spread the batter out just like regular brownies.

Chai Latte French Toast Recipe

Inspired by my friends at Eclipse Coffee and Books in Montevallo, I decided to use my Watkins Chai Latte as a coating for french toast this weekend. Boy, was that ever a great idea!! This recipe is fantastic, and if you love french toast you really must try this soon! It was HEAVENLY!

Watkins Chai Latte French Toast Recipe
Ingredients:
1 package Kings Hawaiian Sweet Snacker Rolls (find them in your grocers deli or bakery)
4-5 eggs, beaten (more as needed)
Watkins Cooking Spray
3-4 Tbsp Watkins Chai Latte Mix
Maple Syrup (optional)
1 Ziploc bag

Directions:
Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Beat eggs and pour into a shallow dish. Spray skillet with Watkins Cooking Spray. Dip both sides of Snacker Rolls into bread mixture, cook over medium heat until browned on both sides. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add Chai latte mix to Ziploc bag, then add warm french toast, one piece at a time. Shake the french toast around inside the bag to completely coat each piece. Repeat until all pieces are coated.

Serve with a side of maple syrup for dipping and a hot steaming cup of chai latte or a big glass of ice cold milk.

Grab the morning paper and enjoy this delicious treat! I have no doubt that you will love this.

Caramel Apple Dip recipe

1 package (8 oz/227 g) cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup/80 mL brown sugar
1 tsp/5 mL Original Double-Strength Vanilla
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Caramel Extract

Blend first four ingredients using electric mixer. Use as a dip for apple slices.

1-1/2 quarts/liters water

1/4 tsp/1.2 mL Black Pepper
Pinch of Cayenne Pepper
Pinch of Organic Thyme
6 slices French bread
Butter or margarine
1 cup/250 mL (4 oz/113 g) shredded cheese (Swiss or Cheddar)

Directions
Peel and thinly slice onions. Heat the 3 tbsp/45 ml butter in a heavy 3-quart/liter saucepan over low heat; add onions and cook slowly, stirring until golden in color, about 10 minutes. Gradually blend in water, soup bases, and seasonings. Bring to a boil; cover and simmer about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, toast one side of bread under broiler until golden brown. Butter untoasted side and sprinkle slices with 1/4 cup/60 ml cheese; broil until cheese is melted. To serve, place hot soup into oven-proof bowls or mugs; float French bread slices on top. Sprinkle with remaining cheese; broil until cheese is bubbly and brown.

1 tbps/30 mL Cumin
2 tsp/10 mL Chili Seasoning

1 tsp/5 mL Paprika
1 tsp/5mL Allspice
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Cayenne Pepper
1 tsp/5 mL Purest Ground Cinnamon
1 lbs sirloin, cut 1-inch cubes
Bell peppers, onions, mushrooms or vegetables of choice cut into chunks

Directions
In small bowl stir together all spice rub ingredients. Sprinkle sirloin with about 2 tbsp/30 mL spice rub. Reserve remaining rub in airtight container for future use. Thread beef onto skewers along with vegetables. Grill or broil turning occasionally, until meat is cooked to desired doneness about 5 to 7 minutes. Serve atop a bed of cooked couscous or rice.

1/2 tsp/2.5 mL salt
1/4 cup/60 mL butter

1 1/4–1 1/2 cups/310–375 mL heavy cream
1/4 cup/60 mL walnuts, chopped

Directions
Preheat oven to 400F/200C. Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, orange peel, salt and butter. Stir in vanilla, cream and walnuts. Drop on baking sheet using a 1/4 cup/60 mL measuring cup. Brush with butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, if desired. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until brown.Cool shortcakes and cover with strawberries and whipped cream.

Sweetened strawberries
4–6 cups/1 to 1.5 quarts strawberries
1/4 cup/60 mL sugar

Hull and quarter strawberries, toss in a medium bowl with sugar, let stand at least 20 minutes. Makes 12 biscuits.

2 tbsp/30 mL Original Grapeseed Oil

Taco Salsa
1 (16 oz/454 g) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 large tomato, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 Anaheim or poblano pepper, diced
1/3 cup/80 mL red onion, finely chopped
4 green onions, chopped
1 tbsp/15 mL Salsa & Sour Cream Snack & Dip Seasoning
1 tbsp/15 mL Cilantro
1 tsp/5 mL Cumin
1 tsp/5 mL Garlic Granules
1 tbsp/15 mL Citrus Cilantro Grapeseed Oil
Shredded lettuce for garnish

Directions

Rub chicken breast with spices. In a large skillet sauté chicken in grapeseed oil. Cook over medium high heat, turning once, for 10 to 12 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink. Shred chicken for tacos, enchiladas or fajitas. Combine all ingredients for the Taco Salsa and serve on top of tacos with lettuce.

Brownies... mmm. Who doesn't love 'em?

When I was in the hospital after giving birth my sister brought up a gift basket from Whole Foods that contained a package of Two Bite Brownies. And ever since then, I've been hooked.

The only thing that could make them any better is CHOCOLATE ICING!!!

You must try these! This icing is foolproof and oh so good.

Watkins Chocolate Dessert Mix Frosting

2 cups/500 mL powdered sugar
1/2 cup/125 mL Watkins Dessert Mix (Any flavor, but for these I used chocolate)
1/4 cup/60 mL vegetable shortening such as Crisco
1/3 cup/80 mL half-and-half ( you could sub milk)

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl and mix with electric mixer for about 2 minutes. Add more half-and-half or powdered sugar as needed for
desired consistency.

Makes enough to frost one 2-layer cake, or a container of two bite brownies with some leftover for finger lickin'!

Looking for a crowd-pleasing recipe for a football viewing party or holiday / Christmas get-together? Try this!

Watkins Garden Vegetable Spinach Dip Recipe:
3 TBSP Watkins Garden Vegetable Snack & Dip Mix OR 1 single serving packet Garden Vegetable Dip Mix
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayo
1/2 cup chopped water chestnuts
1 small package frozen chopped spinach, dethawed and drained

Microwave frozen spinach in a microwave safe dish for 1-2 minutes until dethawed. Drain onto paper towels, wringing thoroughly over the sink to remove excess water.

Mix sour cream, mayo, Watkins Garden Vegetable Dip mix, water chestnuts and spinach in a bowl. Stir until well blended. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve chilled with Wheat Thins, Ritz crackers or in a bread bowl.

Sesame Garlic Veggie Pizza

Ingredients:
8 oz package cream cheese, softened
1 can Pillsbury crescent rolls
1.5 T. Watkins Sesame Garlic Snack & Dip Seasoning
1/8 cup each chopped:
red bell pepper,
yellow squash,
carrot,
cucumber,
zucchini,
broccoli

Mix Sesame Garlic Snack & Dip seasoning with block of softened cream cheese. Set aside. Chop all veggies into small chunks.

Roll out crescent rolls into a large rectangle, pinch all edges together and flatten with a rolling pin. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes until browned. Remove from oven and let cool. Spread with Sesame Garlic Cream cheese, sprinkle veggies on top. Cut into small rectangles. Serve immediately.

Tomato Basil Chicken Recipe

I cooked up a little recipe that is totally yummy and I think you all should try! It's simple, healthy and delicious. This recipe uses a Limited Edition Snack and Dip Seasoning, which is only available for a short time. I have this item in stock right now in both the full size jars and the sample sizes. I have all of the other Watkins ingredients in stock as well. Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing any of these items!

Boneless skinless chicken breasts (enough to feed your family)
Watkins Tomato & Basil Snack and Dip Seasoning
Watkins New Natural Garlic and Herb Seasoning Blend
Watkins Original Grapeseed oil ( I used the Original, but I'm sure the Garlic and Parsley flavor would be good, too!
Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place chicken breasts in individual squares of aluminum foil, drizzle each with grapeseed oil. Sprinkle generously with Tomato & Basil Seasoning, Garlic Herb Seasoning, salt and pepper.

Fold over the sides of the aluminum foil to form a pouch around the chicken to hold in the steam. Place on cookie sheet in oven for about 25-30 minutes until chicken has an internal temp of 165 degrees.

Serve with pasta, rice, or on a salad!

Showing teacher appreciation with food

Last week was Teacher Appreciation week at my son's preschool. For the teacher's luncheon I signed up for a bread and a dessert. The bread part was easy - I decided to make Watkins Rosemary Bread with Sea Salt.

Oh yeah, baby.

The recipe for this is super simple. Just add 2 Tbsp of Rosemary and 1 Tbsp of Parsley to the Good Tastings bread mix, then follow the directions on the back of the package. When you take it out of the oven, sprinkle it was Sea Salt and a little Garlic Powder and you are done!

It makes a delicious loaf of savory bread.

For dessert, I decided to make my favorite type of candy.

Peanut Butter Cornflake squares

Ummmm..

Want to see how I make them? Here, I'll show you!

Start with these simple ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1 cup light karo syrup
1 tsp Watkins Double Strength Vanilla
1 cup peanut butter
4 cups Cornflakes
2 cups shredded coconut

In a large mixing bowl combine the coconut and cornflakes.

Give 'em a quick stir and set 'em aside.

In a sauce pan bring the Karo to boil over medium high heat.

Add the sugar

And stir it around with the syrup.

You really should use a candy thermometer for this next part, but I've been making this candy since I was in the womb, so I just use the old eyeball it method. You want the sugar mixture to get to the soft ball stage. Here is a good explanation about that.

Like I said, I just eyeball it.

See my soft ball? Yep, it's done. Take it off the heat, quick!

When you remove it from the heat, add the vanilla. And be sure to drip the vanilla all over the spatula and get it good and messy. PS - no, I do not sell Pampered Chef products. I just own a whole bunch of their stuff.

Stir that vanilla around and then add the peanut butter. I like chunky. You might like smooth. Your choice.

Look at that oooey goooeyness. Ummmm.

Here, get a closer look. Are you drooling yet?

Ok, now go spray a pan with some Watkins cooking spray because this is about to get sticky. I used this disposable pan since it was going to the teacher's luncheon at school.

Pour your oooey goooey peanut butter mixture over the bowl full of cornflakes and coconut.

And then stir stir stir until you feel like your arm might fall off. The mixture should be really thick and stringy like taffy.

Then pour it all into your pan, and try to smooth it out a little on the top.

And if you are really smart, you will make a double batch so that you can have some for yourself at home. Trust me--this stuff is SO GOOD, you will be glad you saved some for yourself.

PS- this also makes great candy to give away at Christmas time! Or Halloween! Or anytime random Wednesday.

Strawberry Salsa with Cinnamon Chips

Annie's Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips

"This delicious salsa made with fresh kiwis, apples and berries is a sweet, succulent treat when served on homemade cinnamon tortilla chips. Enjoy it as a summer appetizer or an easy dessert."

Ingredients:

2 kiwis, peeled and diced

2 Golden Delicious apples - peeled, cored and diced

8 ounces raspberries

1 pound strawberries

2 tablespoons white sugar

1 tablespoon brown sugar

3 tablespoons fruit preserves, any flavor

10 (10 inch) flour tortillas

Watkins cooking spray

2 Tbsp Watkins Cinnamon

2 cups white sugar

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix kiwis, Golden Delicious apples, raspberries, strawberries, white sugar, brown sugar and fruit preserves. Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 15 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

3. Coat one side of each flour tortilla with butter flavored cooking spray. Cut into wedges and arrange in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Mix together cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle wedges with desired amount. Spray again with cooking spray.

4. Bake in the preheated oven 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat with any remaining tortilla wedges. Allow to cool approximately 15 minutes. Serve with chilled fruit mixture.

Spring Flingin'

Last weekend Lori and I setup our Watkins booth at the Mt. Laurel Spring Festival. There were lots of great vendors there, along with inflatables for the kids and plenty of wonderful food!

We used a similar setup as our Tannehill booth but we had to use Lori's tent this time which gave us a little less space. That tent was great for keeping the sun off of us, though!

We met a lot of great people and really enjoyed hanging out for the day. Here is Lori out in front of the booth peddling our goods.

We also took J's window creations, and they drew a LOT of attention. Aren't they beautiful? I've decided I'm going to keep that greenhouse one for myself. I love it!

If you've never been to the Town of Mt. Laurel you should really go check it out sometime. There are several great shops to peruse and if you're in the mood for some delicious food, check out The Saturday Gourmet. I had their applewood smoked chicken salad sandwich and gouda mac and cheese along with the mint vanilla lemonade for lunch.

WOW. Just wow. Incredible food. I am still craving it.

Hocking our wares

In March Lori and I had our first big Watkins booth at Tannehill Trade Day.

It was a good day, but I'm glad we didn't stay for two days worth or I might have died from exhaustion.

It takes a lot of work to pull off these militant rows of dip and lotions!

With two kids and Anthony in Boston for two months, we are struggling with the Watkins biz right now. Lori and I plan to give it one more shot at Mt. Laurel Spring Festival on April 18th, and the assess where we are from there.

I mean, who doesn't want to buy from these two shining faces? I know I would.

J spent a lot of time in his basement workshop creating these beautiful wooden window shadowboxes.

I'm hoping to sell some to the Mt. Laurel crowd!

The best part about Tannehill was seeing TONS of people from my past. Facebook has reconnected me with so many people from elementary school and high school. I'm blown away when I look through my friends list and see names of people that I have not seen in 20 years!

Let's see if I can remember who all I saw that day at Tannehill. There were so many I hope I don't forget anyone. Shannon Niblett (Turner) from my Dairy Queen days in high school was there with her family. They had several booths set up and gave me insider info before I arrived. Clint and Brandy Hayes came out with their two adorable kiddos. My cousins Karen and Lindsey showed up and perused the booth for a minute. Andy and Meredith were there, and I felt bad because they arrived at the same time as my old friend Tiffany from high school who I haven't seen since graduation day 14 years ago! Tiffany was there with her mom and sweet little boy Sam who is not much older than Garrett. It was so great to see her again.

Then there were the REAL blasts from my past! The old Vance peeps! Amy Foster stopped by with her little boy who was born just 2 weeks after Garrett was born. My best friend from elementary school, Kristi Kizziah came by with her new husband! I haven't seen her in FOREVER, so that was really cool to get to see her again!

It's so awesome to see everyone again. I was so busy I didn't get to talk to anyone for very long, but I was so touched that so many people braved the crowds and stopped by my booth. I'm glad I have facebook in my life to keep me updated on all of their lives.

Grilled Asparagus: if you haven't tried this, you should!

Let me first tease you with a photo of this beautiful meal that I had last night, and then tell you how to make grilled asparagus.

Just look at that.... makes your mouth water, huh?

Ok, this is REALLY easy to make, I promise. Just three ingredients! It doesn't get much easier than that.

Ingredients:
1 bundle fresh asparagus
Watkins Cooking Spray
Watkins Garlic and Herb seasoning

Directions:

Rinse asparagus well, and chop about 2-3" off the end of the stems.

Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, drop the asparagus in for about 1 minute. Remove from water and place in a single layer on a grill pan that has been liberally sprayed with Cooking Spray. Spray asparagus with more cooking spray, then sprinkle with Garlic and Herb Seasoning.

Place on grill for 4-5 minutes until slightly charred, turning once.

That's it. They come off tasting absolutely delicious.

I promise you will not be disappointed with this one.

Featured Recipe: Cinnamon Spice Cookies

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp Purest Ground Cinnamon

1/2 tsp Organic Nutmeg

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups sugar

12 tbsp butter (1 ½ sticks), softened

1 egg

1/2 tsp Original Double-Strength Vanilla

1/4 cup molasses

Directions
Preheat oven to 350F. In a medium bowl whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. In a shallow bowl set aside 1/2 cup sugar.

With an electric mixer beat butter, remaining sugar, egg, vanilla, and molasses until well blended. Combine with dry ingredients until dough forms. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and dip in 1/2 cup reserved sugar.

Arrange on a baking sheet, about 3-inches apart. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.

Crockpot Beef Stew

Ingredients:

1 lb beef stew meat

1 tbsp. Watkins Grapeseed Oil

1 tsp. Watkins Sea Salt

1 tsp. Watkins Black Pepper

1/2 medium onion, chopped

1 cloves garlic, minced

1/3 cup Watkins Beef Soup Base

1/3 cup Watkins Onion Soup Base

2 cups water

2 Watkins bay leaves

1 tsp. Watkins Organic thyme

2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 1 -inch chunks

1 cup frozen peas

Heat grapeseed oil in skillet over medium high heat, add stew meat, salt and pepper. Add onions and garlic, cook meat on both sides until browned. Drain fat and transfer all ingredients to crockpot. Add all vegetables and herbs. In a medium bowl whisk beef soup base and water, stirring until combined. Pour over contents of crockpot. Add more water if needed. Cook on low 6-8 hours.

Beware of the Mexican Vanilla

On a trip to Cozumel a few years back, I was given a free bottle of vanilla with my purchase of some pewter serving platters. At a recent Good Tastings Party, a customer said that she didn't need any vanilla because someone had just brought her back a big bottle of Mexican vanilla. It's tempting to think that because it's made in Mexico, it will be stronger or more concentrated, and therefore better. But in reality, if you or a family member has brought home a bottle of vanilla from Mexico recently, you should be wary of using it. I just stumbled across this article and thought it was information you need to know.

Natural vanilla extract can make foods taste great, but the chemical version -- which is supposed to be labeled as artificial flavoring -- is often made with a toxic substance called coumarin, which is related to warfarin, a blood thinner, and can be dangerous. The U.S. has banned coumarin in foods since 1954, but some products from Mexico and Latin America still use it.

The FDA has issued an official warning about it here. They also list some tips for consumers:

Be wary about buying vanilla in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Look for "vanilla bean" in the ingredient list on the label. If it has "tonka bean" or if there is no ingredient list or a vague one, avoid this product.
Don't risk your health to save a few dollars. Vanilla with coumarin is generally sold at a lower price than pure vanilla because tonka beans are cheaper to grow than vanilla beans. If the price sounds too good to be true, pass it up.
Don't buy a food product in the United States that is not labeled in English. Products may have Spanish or other non-English labeling, but they must also have complete English labeling to meet U.S. Government standards. (Products sold only in Puerto Rico are an exception—they are not required to be labeled in English.)

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

What an eventful two weeks it has been for us! The past two Saturdays have been full-on Watkins mode for me. My friend and associate Lori and I have worked two different vendor booths for two Saturdays in a row.

Last weekend we set up shop in the 24 degree weather at an outside booth for Centreville's Christmas on the Square. Now, I don't know about yall, but cold weather and I don't get along very well. My bones were aching out there in that freezing weather, but we toughed it out and had a pretty successful weekend. It was our first outdoor booth, so we gained some experience in putting up the EZ-Up tent.

Sorry, I have no pictures from last weekend because our fingers were too frozen to take a photo. No, just kidding. Sorta. Actually we both forgot our cameras, plus we had a steady stream of customers all day so there wasn't much time to take a picture anyway! But we had a really good time talking to customers and the other vendors. We found out more information about Tannehill Trade Days, which we are considering for next spring and fall.

Thanks so much to everyone braved the cold weather with us and stopped by our booth to chat! We really appreciate your warm welcome and business. Also a HUGE thank you to Ashley's Flowers and Gifts for letting us drop off the orders for pickup. We owe y'all one! Also a huge thank you for Lori's husband, Anthony, for making the delivery for us yesterday and my husband for helping us break down our booth. We really appreciate all of your help!

Yesterday we were scheduled for a booth at the Santa Shop at Meadowview Elementary school. We sold so much product at the Centreville show that we had to place an order on Monday to restock. We knew we'd be cutting it close with the order since it has been taking 5 business days to arrive. I kept my eye on the UPS online tracking and it was scheduled to arrive on Friday. I planned on spending Friday night pricing the inventory and getting ready for the show which started at 8 am Saturday morning.

Unfortunately when I arrived home on Friday my front porch was empty. No UPS boxes in sight. I checked the online tracking again and I had just missed them by TEN MINUTES. I was so upset. Immediately Lori and I went to work trying to track down the UPS man because we knew he would still be in the area. No luck. We were nearing hysteria when finally we settled on driving to the Customer Call center in Birmingham and picking up the shipment there later that night. So we headed down there at 6 pm, and after an hour of waiting in line with many other people who also missed their delivery men, we finally got my three boxes! What an ordeal!

We vowed to never cut it that close with a delivery ever again. I had to promise Lori's husband that I would bake him a cake in order to make up for dragging his wife all over town on a wild goose chase while he kept their two year old son at home. I told him I'd even use Watkins Double Strength Vanilla in the batter. :o)

Here is Lori at our booth at the Santa Shop this past weekend.

We had all sorts of great items for sale, along with dips and breads to sample and lotions to try. We offered the Salsa and Sour Cream dip, the Crab dip and the Bacon Cheddar dip. Once again, they flew off the shelf as fast as we could help people. Everyone really love our dips!

We had Chai Latte and Hot Cocoa mixes in nice mugs as another great gift. There were also lots of products pre-packaged and ready to go.

We sold assorted bread mixes in oven mitts. What a great instant gift for the baker of the family!

In Centreville we had a drawing for a Watkins Gift Certificate. Yesterday we had a drawing for this awesome baking themed basket chock full of Watkins goodies. Congratulations to both our lucky winners!

I still have a few of these items for sale if anyone is in need of some last minute Christmas gifts! Please let me know and I will be happy to make you a great deal!

Why I chose Watkins

Many people have asked me why I chose to become a Watkins Associate, so I thought I would share my story here. In October of 2008 I decided that I needed a change in my life. I had a great husband, a beautiful nine month old son, and a challenging full time job, but my days had become extremely repetitive. Monday through Friday I fell into the same routine, over and over again. I was in need of something different to help break me out of that monotony. I had lost touch with a lot of my old friends after my son was born, so I felt like I needed a way to get out of my house and meet some new people.

I decided that I wanted to start a direct sales business where I could sell products at in-home parties and vendor shows. I considered my options, but all the popular companies in my area seemed to have such an over-saturation of reps that it seemed useless for me to even try with one of them. I felt like I needed to find something exciting, new and different to introduce here in the Birmingham area. Something that offered great products that I loved so that they would be easy for me to sell.

One night I Googled "direct sales companies" and found plenty of options, but the trouble was choosing one! So, I went to a popular website for newlyweds and asked on the forums what other people were doing around the country. One person mentioned Watkins, and that sparked my interest. I had bought their lotions and body oils before, so I was familiar with their brand. I had no idea that they offered a direct sales line with over 350 products, so I was excited to find out more information on the company. After skimming the Watkins website, I knew that this was the company for me. I am extrovert, so the social aspect of doing Good Tastings parties really attracted me to the business. It was also very appealing that Watkins didn't require anything more than the $39.95 membership package.

I loved that Watkins products are so affordable for everyone, which is very important in today's economy. I loved that the company was so well established and carried such high quality products. I loved that they are so dedicated to being environmentally friendly, and using all natural products. After my son was born I have really become more aware of trying to be more "green" and not use so many harsh chemicals around him. I also have made an effort to introduce mostly organic foods as he has started eating solids. I care so much about his health and well being, and I want to give him the very best start in leading a healthy life. I felt assured that Watkins could provide my family with a wide variety of all-natural products that would help us lead a healthier lifestyle.

We had an absolutely incredible weekend at our first vendor booth event! I cannot tell you all how overjoyed I am by the results of this show. I'm so excited to share these photos with you all. Friday night and Saturday morning we set up shop at the Winter Festival of a local elementary school. Thanks so much to the PTO and staff for giving us such a great opportunity to share our new business with people. Also thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth and said hello! It was great to meet everyone.

We provided samples of the Tomato Horseradish dip and the Salsa and Sour Cream dip, along with apple spice bread and pumpkin spice bread. The next day we also provided Good Tastings bread with grapeseed oil, the new garlic herb seasoning blend and a little black pepper for dipping.

Everyone raved about the samples, so much that we sold quite a bit of products right off the table! Even the husbands and kids declared our food delicious, and some went in search of Mom to come back and sample everything.

In addition to the food we had set up displays of a lot of the other items, including tester bottles of the lotions so people could smell how delicious the products are. The lemon scent won the popularity contest with mango coming in a close second.

We were definitely the new kids on the block at this event, but the reception we received was awesome. The Watkins products generated a lot of interest, and providing the samples really helped spark people's curiosity. Some people had never heard of us and had no idea what we sold, so we took the time to explain our extensive product line.

Others recognized the brand from seeing it at a local store, but didn't know there were so many other products available. And then others knew about the products from past experience but had no idea it was still available as a direct sales line. We heard a lot of "Oh! My grandmother swore by Watkins double strength vanilla for all her baking!" A few people even told us that their grandparents or parents were Watkins associates in the past. Seeing our products was a walk down memory lane for a lot of people. I loved talking to everyone and really enjoyed hearing their stories.

Our raffle for the gift basket was a huge success. Congratulations to our winner! In the basket was most of the makings for Pumpkin Spice bread along with other kitchen accessories. I know she will love it.

We had a lot of people interested in booking a Good Tastings party, so it looks like our schedules are going to be jam packed for a while. We also found out about two more upcoming events from our nice vendor neighbors Rachel and Bobby. One event is at a Christmas Bazaar on December 6th and another Santa Shop on December 13th. We are planning to do both, which will probably mean even more bookings for GT parties.

Let me take a minute to say if anyone would like to sign up to become an associate and help us cover some of these events, please feel free to contact me for more info. This is an incredible ground level opportunity that could really be a huge success for you! I have been so amazed at how easy these products are to sell. They are such great quality and affordable prices that they seem to just sell themselves.

Word to your MUFA

Fat that accumulates around the abdomen increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Doctors recommend that people who are heavier in the midsection, reduce this area with diet and exercise.

Pumpkin Butter Cupcakes
In medium bowl stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. In large bowl cream together pumpkin and sugar until light and fluffy; beat in eggs. Blend in pumpkin. Stir in dry ingredients and milk, blending until batter is smooth. Stir in chopped walnuts. Spoon batter into paper lined muffin tins. Fill about 2/3 full. Bake at 375°F for 18 to 22 minutes. Makes 16 cupcakes.

Brown Sugar Frosting
In 2 quart saucepan melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and half-and-half. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until mixture comes to a boil (2 to 3 minutes). Remove from heat and add powdered sugar and vanilla; beat until well mixed (1 to 2 minutes). Let cool to spreading consistency (5 to 10 minutes). Frost cupcakes.

I've had some requests for the recipes used in yesterday's brunch, so I will post them here. Enjoy!

Hot Crab Dip
• 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 8 oz sour cream
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
• 1 (6 ounce) cans crabmeat, drained and flaked
• 1/8 teaspoon Watkins Organic Garlic Powder
• 1 package Crab Snack & Dip Seasoning Sample (1 1/2 Tbsp.)
• Watkins Black Pepper and Watkins Sea Salt to taste
• 1 loaf Bread with Rosemary and Sea Salt
Preheat oven to 350F. In a medium bowl, combine all the ingredients and spread mixture evenly into a 1 quart baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove baked crab dip from the oven, and stir well. Serve hot with bite size chunks of Rosemary Bread with Sea Salt.

Bread with Rosemary and Sea Salt
• 1 package Good Tastings Bread Mix
• 1 12-oz can beer or lemon-lime flavored soda
• 3 tbsp Watkins Rosemary
• 3 tbsp Watkins Parsley
• 1 tbsp coarsely-ground Watkins Sea Salt
• 1 tbsp melted butter
Combine 2 Tbsp rosemary and 2 Tbsp parsley with dry bread mix until well mixed. Pour in beer or soda. Mix until just moistened. Do not overmix. Pour batter in loaf pan. Sprinkle remaining herbs on top, followed by sea salt. Drizzle with butter and bake at 325°F for 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Salsa & Sour Cream CheeseBall
• 2 packages (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
• 1 packet (3 Tbsp) Watkins Salsa & Sour Cream Snack & Dip Seasoning
• Watkins Omelet & Soufflé Seasoning
Mix snack & dip seasoning into cream cheese. Form into a log and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. When ready to serve, unwrap and roll in Omelet & Soufflé Seasoning. Serve with crackers or breadsticks.

Buffalo Chicken Dip
• 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and shredded
• 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup Ranch dressing
• 3/4 cup Calypso Hot Pepper Sauce
• 1 Tbsp. Watkins Cayenne (optional for more heat)
Heat chicken and hot pepper sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through. Blend cream cheese and ranch dressing together until smooth. Stir into chicken mixture. Add cayenne to taste. Cook, stirring until well blended and serve warm with tortilla chips.

Roast Beef Rollups with Horseradish Tomato Spread
• 1 sample packet (3 Tbsp) Tomato Horseradish Snack & Dip Seasoning
• 2 packages (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
• 1/4- 1/2 pound Deli Roast Beef
• Flour Tortillas
Mix the dip packet with cream cheese allow it to sit for 1/2 hour, spread on a tortillas, top with deli roast beef or sliced turkey, wrap tightly, slice in 1" pieces and serve toothpicks in each one.

Garlic Cheddar Sausage Balls
• 1 lb. mild sausage
• 12 oz. sharp cheese (softened)
• 2 cups Bisquick
• 1 tsp. Watkins Organic Garlic Powder
• 2-3 dashes of Calypso Hot Pepper Sauce (or more depending on taste)
• 1 tsp. Watkins Cayenne Pepper (or more depending on taste)
Mix all ingredients thoroughly by hand or using the dough hook on a stand mixer. Roll into small balls. Place on baking sheets sprayed lightly with Watkins Cooking Spray. Bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes, or until done (depends upon the size). Remove from baking sheet and place on paper-towel lined tray. Best served warm.

Cinnamon Sticky Monkey Bread
• 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted, divided
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
• 1 tbsp water
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1-1/2 tsp Purest Ground Cinnamon 6 oz.
• 2 cans refrigerated regular or buttermilk biscuits
Combine 2 tbsp melted butter, brown sugar, nuts, and water and place in bottom of a 10-inch bundt pan. Mix sugar and cinnamon together. Dip each biscuit lightly into remaining melted butter, then into sugar/cinnamon mixture. Place each biscuit on end in bundt pan. Pinch tips or sides of biscuits slightly together (this helps prevent ring from falling apart when served.). Bake at 400ºF for 20 to 25 minutes. After baking; turn out on plate. Serve immediately. Makes 10 servings.

Honey Butter Spread
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup honey
• 1 tsp Watkins Cinnamon
• 1 tsp Watkins Original Double-Strength Vanilla

Melt butter in microwave, add honey and mix well. Add the Vanilla and Cinnamon and mix well. Honey Butter will thicken as it sits.

Vanilla Cream Cheese Fruit Dip
• 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
• 1 jar (7 oz) marshmallow cream
• 1-1/2 tsp Watkins Original Double-Strength Vanilla
• Fruit of choice, cut into bite size pieces

Combine all ingredients and mix well with electric mixer. Serve with assorted fruit, such as pineapple, apples, pears, or strawberries. Makes 2 cups.

Try This: Add 1 Tbsp of Watkins Orange Extract or Watkins Lemon Extract. Serve with graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels or other snacks.

Grand Opening Success!

The Grand Opening was a huge success! We had a great turnout even though it was drizzling rain and the temperature dropped quickly this morning.

There were drawings every 30 minutes in which all the door prizes were handed out. A big congratulations to all of our lucky winners! I hope you enjoy using the Watkins products.

Here are some photos from the big event.

When you entered the door, there was a table set up with info cards to fill out to enter the doorprize drawing, and catalog folders.

In the dining room was a huge spread of food to sample the Watkins products. These pics were taken in a rush just before everyone arrived, so not all the food was out yet.

On the left side we have grapes and vanilla fruit dip on the tiered stand, apple and orange spice muffins, monkey bread on the cake plate, salsa and sour cream cheese ball with crackers beside that. In the middle is a basket of regular and rosemary bread. Under that steamer lid was hot crab dip, sausage balls and buffalo chicken dip. Those three were a HUGE hit! The crab dip was devoured. I would definitely make it again. Above the steamer are the roast beef rollups with Tomato Horseradish spread.

On the other side of the room was pasta salad, veggies and Salsa and Sour cream dip:

In the kitchen was a hot chocolate station where we handed out samples of all the seasonal flavored hot cocoa mixes and chai latte. Everyone raved about the cocoas.

There were different stations set up around the house where everyone could sample the products. On the living room sofa table was the Natural Cleaning Products station.

This table held the Personal Care items and the hostess tree. If you booked a party today you got to pick a gift from the tree!

Here were all the prizes and giveaways set up on the fireplace. The grand prize baskets were a huge hit.

Along the bar was more information and product demos. I set up the cooking spray demo comparing Watkins to Pam and the vanilla demo comparing Watkins to McCormick.

And finally, in my bedroom, I set up the "In the news" station, where you could read what your favorite magazines have said about Watkins products.

I had such a wonderful day, and I'm so thankful to everyone who came and browsed all the samples. I do hope you will call me if you are interested in hosting a Good Tastings party, or if you are interested in signing up to become a Watkins Associate. I have already had interest from two friends who want to sign up! I am so excited about this! Thank you so very much, ladies!

The Importance of a trunk stash

Today I learned the importance of carrying catalogs and flyers in my car. I went to the post office to drop off invites for my grand opening, and the postmaster took notice of my Watkins stuff. He started asking me more info, so I told him about the products and what I had to offer. I told him I would bring him a catalog so he could look at all the selection. I thought I had one in my car, but as it turns out, I didn't! Luckily I work just down the street from the post office, so I dropped one off later.

So... lesson learned. Always be prepared. I should have listened to my Eagle Scout of a husband more often.
